Fergus spent most of his childhood on Wimbledon Common with an 'I Spy' book tucked firmly under his arm. By his 10th birthday, he had narrowed his focus to butterflies and moths which he began to catch and breed. From this, his interest in wild food started - in order to collect caterpillars and eggs, he needed to know the respective food plants for different butterfly and moth species.
As time passed, Fergus' interest turned into a full-blown love of wild food and cooking. In his late teens he trained for two years at Thanet College in Broadstairs to become a chef. He also developed a huge passion for mushrooms, so much so his girlfriend at the time wrote to Antonio Carluccio to ask how his wife coped with all the trips to cold, wet woods to find mushrooms!
Fergus set up Forager in 2003 delivering wild food all around Kent and to a number of top London restaurants including Fifteen, The Ivy, Le Caprice and J Sheekey's. In 2005 he decided to branch out on his own, setting up Wild Man Wild Food with the emphasis being on having fun, eating well and foraging in an environmentally sustainable way.
Fergus has already had a huge amount of media interest including articles in The Telegraph, the Observer Food Monthly and The Ecologist. His TV credits include 'The Road Kill Chef' on BBC 3 and 'The Urban Chef' on BBC 2.
